Humane Society of Madison County has moved to 2020 ST RT 142 NE (aka 2020 Plain City-Georgesville Road), West Jefferson OH, 43162. (Exit #85). The shelter is located just a quarter mile south of I-70.

Hours of operation are as follows.

Dear HSMC Supporter,

The Humane Society of Madison County have moved into our new shelter located at 2020 ST RT 142 NE, West Jefferson OH 43162. This new shelter has been a dream of many animal lovers and pet owners for a long time. If you have not made it out for a tour, we are open monday to friday from 1pm to 5pm and saturday noon to 5pm. Closed on sunday and all major holidays. Once winter is over, we are planning some evening hours.

The new shelter has been a blessing for the shelter animals, the shelter staff and public. All is now under one roof and there is a room for folks to visit with the animals. It will be easier to keep clean and providing even better care for the animals.

Of course this new shelter will come more expense for the HSMC. Now that we are no longer on county property, the HSMC will have to pay all utilities, have the lawn mowed, snow removed, etc. These are expenses we never had before. The HSMC board knew we would have more responsibility at the new shelter, however, it is worth it. We are hoping you feel the same.

Enclosed is the membership form for 2012. By becoming a member, you will help in providing the funds to continue our mission of caring for Madison County homeless animals. You will receive information on fundraising events, special member only events, and so much more. We can only print so many newsletters so if at all possible, please let us send our newsletter to your e-mail. Be assured we will not share your e-mail address with anyone. We have big plans for the HSMC in 2012 and we are sure you will not want to miss a thing.

If you would be interested in helping the HSMC at the shelter or with some of our events, please ask us to send you a volunteer form or pick one up at the shelter. Even volunteering for a few hours a month can make the biggest different to the HSMC and the animals in our care.

The Bonzi is an annual award given to individuals, businesses, and groups who have made a difference in the life of an animal or the lives of the animals we serve.

Bonzi is an HSMC alumnus and our first successful neglect prosecutioncase. He lives with his forever family in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he now enjoys dual citizenship. We still get emails and photos of his exploits in his new country. And his story illustrates why we do what we do.

When naming this award we felt that Bonzi’s story and all of the people who played a part in it exemplified what this award was about. As was fitting, Dog Warden Deputy Sheriff Gary Kronk was the first honoree.

This year we had a lot of great nominations for people who had really made a difference. It was a difficult decision and we’d like to take a moment to thank each and every person who supports us.

And now to the announcement: The Bonzi goes to:

Bark Park - This amazing place is the private residence of Marcia Perry-Rhoades and Lennie Rhoades. For over a decade this non-profit organization has raised over a million dollars for shelters and rescues in this area. We have been fortunate to have been a recipient of several days over the years where all the proceeds of the day went to us. They have also supported Beagles R Us and Coonhound Companions, groups near and dear to our hearts.

Huntington Bank West Jefferson Branch – These great people let us hold our successful bake sales there. They are ready to help bring baked goods in and set up and always have tables waiting for us. They are pretty exceptional people who make these fundraisers successful.

Betty Dellinger – Betty is quick to roll up her sleeves and volunteer at not only our fundraisers, but for other groups when we put out the call for help. She also treks over to Petsmart on a regular basis to care for our cats in their adoption center.

Jane Palmer - Jane has donated countless hours baking for bake sales, making those fabulous totes, and now making great pet beds. She is living proof that you don’t have to work directly with the animals to volunteer and that our volunteers, regardless of their age, do great things for us.

Kathy Bowles - A volunteer with us for a number of years, she has helped with Santa photos, adoption events, Bark Park, and Slobberfest. We need only ask and Kathy will show up ready to help

HSMC moving to West Jefferson

The Humane Society of Madison County is slated to move its operations to this former church on Route 142 in West Jefferson.

The Humane Society of Madison County is making plans to move its animal shelter operations from London to West Jefferson. At the same time, the county commissioners and Humane Society are at a stalemate over service contract terms.

The commissioners pay the Humane Society to operate the county dog pound at 1357 State Route 38 SE in London. The county budgeted about $34,000 for those services this year, the same amount as last year.

In March, the Humane Society board rejected the contract terms, saying they need at least twice that amount to cover the county’s statutory obligation to the county’s stray dogs. For now, the Humane Society is operating on the old contract terms.

If the two parties renegotiate, the county contract will follow the Humane Society to its new shelter site. If the two parties don’t reach an agreement, they may part ways. The county would operate its facility in London. The Humane Society would operate its facility in West Jefferson.

The new shelter
The Humane Society’s new shelter site is a 5,000 square-foot building that sits on five acres on State Route 142 NE, a quarter-mile south of I-70. The building is a former Nazarene church.

Geo-Sites Ltd. recently purchased the property. George and Betty Peyton, members of the Humane Society board, own Geo-Sites. The Peytons have offered to lease the property to the Humane Society for $1 a year for 25 years.

The decision to move is unofficial until the board votes on it. The next board meeting is May 18.

“This is a huge, huge thing,” said Cindy Phillips, board secretary. “It’s going to be nice to put everything under one roof.” She also noted the new shelter will have ample parking and is easy to find.

At the county-owned shelter in London, the dogs are kept in kennels inside and outside a block building. The office and cats are housed in a trailer. Sick cats and an area for medical attention are housed in another trailer.

The one-story building at the new site would allow all animals, visitors, volunteers and shelter employees to stay inside. Unlike the county shelter, the West Jefferson facility is completely handicap accessible.

Betty Peyton, who serves as the shelter director, said the new site can house the same number of cats and dogs as the current site. The difference will be the size of dogs the new site can accommodate.

“Our max now is 45 dogs, with kennels big enough for 28 large dogs. At the new shelter, all the kennels will be big enough for large dogs,” she said.

The dog kennels and storage space will occupy the former church sanctuary. Cats, a medical area, and offices will occupy former classrooms.

Renovations should be minor, Peyton said. Carpet will be removed, leaving con-crete floors. New paint inside and fencing outside are needed. Plumbing exists in the sanctuary where baptisms took place.

“We just have to figure out drainage and how to tie into other plumbing in the building,” Peyton said.
With the board’s approval, the goal is to move to the new site by August, she said.

The board is studying the logistics of converting the building, moving the animals, and operating the new facility.

4 Things You Should Know About Your Vet

The treatment your veterinarian and their vet technicians provide is worth the price you must pay. Often you're finishing up with the vet when the receptionist delivers the good news: The bill is ready for you. Now for the bad news: It'll cost you a chunk of change for baby's Bordetella shot and its freshly emptied anal sacs.

But why should you have to pay so much to help a poor, defenseless (not to mention super cute) creature? After all, if you can't find charity at the vet's office, where can you?

Ask Georgette Wilson, DVM, manager of vet operations at Pfizer Animal Health in New York City, and she'll tell you that charity is all a matter of perspective.

"If you're looking for an educated, compassionate, and fair hand in the care and wellbeing of your animal, chances are your vet's already giving it in droves,'' Wilson said. "Unfortunately, too many people fail to recognize the value vets bring to their pets. We're asked over and over again that, if we love animals so much, why aren't we offering our services for free?''

To answer that question — and help you understand why veterinarians are worth their weight in currency — the following are four things you may not know about them, but should. They just may change the way you think about paying on the way out.

#1: They are trained as vigorously as doctors of human medicine.

Consider this:

A. It takes four years of college and four years of veterinary school to become a vet. Then, students must pass both national and state exams to practice, and take continuing education courses to keep up with new developments.

B. It's statistically harder to get into veterinary school than it is to get into a human medical school because of the limited number of vet schools, as compared to medical schools. (There are only 28 vet schools in the United States).

C. Vets going into specialty practice (there are about 20 in veterinary medicine, from cardiology and ophthalmology to behavioral medicine and surgery, etc) go on to do an internship and residency, with each step becoming more competitive.

D. "When all is said and done, a vet can have as many as 11 to 12 years of additional training after high school,'' Wilson said. "Most people don't know that.''

#2: It's not about the money for vets.

While today's veterinarians can make a good living, it's not nearly as much as their counterparts in human medicine. Depending on where they live and their specific field of practice, they can make anywhere from about $35,000 (for equine veterinarians) to $117,000 a year (for laboratory animal vet- erinarians), according to the most recent estimates. Vets in private practice earn around $50,000, and those in government earn around $70,000.

"The reward for us is really not about money, because we don't make as much as many people think,'' Wilson said. "It's really about seeing pets get better.''

#3: They love science and medicine.

"People always say I must love animals to be in veterinary medicine. And I do, but I also love science and medicine," Wilson said. In fact, she and others agree it's the combination of all three that draw people into veterinary practice.

And that's a good thing, since there's plenty of each involved in treating the broad spectrum of species examined and treated by veterinarians. While human physicians must learn about male and female anatomy and physiology, vets need to understand cats, dogs, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, horses, birds, rodents, rabbits, amphibians, reptiles, and so on.

Vets also need to know how each species functions and responds to available medications, and have a solid understanding of the basic behaviors, care requirements, diseases, and parasites related to each species.

#4: They offer value beyond the prescription.

Finally, while vets bring their medical skills and knowledge in treating their patients and educating their patient's owners, they also offer the softer side of what it takes to be a communicative, concerned, and knowledgeable caregiver — and a great advocate for your pet.

"Becoming a vet is a lot of hard work and we take seriously our duty to act in the best interests of our client's pets,'' Wilson said. "Even if owners don't like our recommendations or paying for them, we try to help them understand the value of our experience, education, and expertise. I always hope, as all vets do, that at the end of a visit, owners leave feeling good about how we've helped them.''

Rather than skimping on visits to the vet, pet owners should consider pet insurance and other forms of financial assistance.

More women going into veterinary medicine

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association Web site, 75 percent of those going into veterinary college are women. Why the trend?

"I think women are more comfortable with and better able to express the emotions and compassion required in treating animals,'' said Georgette Wilson, DVM. "It's not that men can't do it, it's that often they're looking for something more lucrative. Regardless, it's nice to have so many women in such a great field.''

February is all about love and celebrating that love. The HSMC celebrates many things, our love of animals, the things we can do to help them, and how we are driven to do what we do. We know that if you're reading this you love animals or you love someone who does. Right about now you're probably thinking that this is a Valentine's Day appeal. Well, it is.

Tired of sending roses and chocolates to your sweetheart for Valentine's Day? Why not give a gift that will bring comfort to a homeless pet for years. The HSMC has some Kuranda dog beds which provide our dogs with a soft, dry place off the floor to sleep, but we don't have enough for all. Note to adopters: Lassie and Cleo and Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in rescue. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog. We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have had it. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another. They've never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They've lived outside, in a crate, or in the basement. They're scared, depressed and anxious. Some are angry. Some are sick. Some have given up. But we are Rescue and we don't give up. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion. So please, please don't come to rescue in the hopes of getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Come to Rescue to give, to love, to save a life -- and to mend your own spirit. For Rescue will reward you in ways you never thought possible. I can promise you this -- a rescue dog will make you a better person.

Lions Club gives a helping hand

The London Lions Club had asked the HSMC to give a presentation at the January Lions Club meeting. Shelter Director Betty Peyton gave a heartfelt speech along with a slideshow of adoptable animals. After the presentation, the Lions Club President Fred Reeder presented a donation of $200.00 along with many items to be used at the shelter. The funds will be used to help take care of the extra items needed for the spay/neuter clinic, Neuterville.

7th Annual Paws and Pals

The 7th Annual Paws and Pals Dinner and Auction was an awesome success. The 50/50 Raffle raised enough funds plus a bit extra help Swami have his bladder stone surgery. The bit extra came from Mr. and Mrs. Stacey Wells, owners of Eitel's Towing. The bit of extra will be put into the Shiba Noelle Fund for future medical emergencies.

Fun was had by all. If you missed this years Paws & Pals, then make sure to watch our website for postings of next year's event which is usually in November.

Age. Yes, been thinking about it since the one day at the shelter when we were talking about the age of animals. How old are they. What is its age.

Age- (noun or verb)- length of time during which a being or thing has existed, a period of time,.

As kids we love it when we “age” which is noted by birthdays. As we get older, we would like to forget the “age” and not celebrate birthdays as much. But once in a while a specific age comes along and you want to celebrate. August 1st, my family celebrated my mother, Jane Palmer, her 75th birthday. However if you ask her, she will tell you that she is 39 and holding. (Of course as soon as she reads this newsletter, I am going to be in big trouble). I am just trying to make a point.

Age should not matter. What should matter is what you do while you are aging. If you are a person who sits around doing nothing, you age more than the person who is out and about doing things or so I have been told. Age should not matter.

I have addressed this in other columns about our animals at the shelter. A few senior animals are still there. I just keep hoping folks will overlook the animal’s age and see them as the loving pets they are.

I keep hoping folks will think of age differently and help celebrate no matter the “age”, which is why I have decided to celebrate my birthday this year. I am not celebrating with a party or anything like that. But I am asking for gifts. However, these gifts are not for me, but for the shelter. Let me explain.

I was born October 10, 1964. This year I will be..... 46 years old or 551 months old, or 2397 weeks old. And according to the internet, if I lived on Mars I would be 24.4 Martian years old... I might like to be a Martian. But I am not a Marian, therefore I will be 46 years old. There I said it or well typed it. I had a hard time turning 30, then 40, now turning 46. Just me maybe, not sure but I had not been happy about it. Well until recently when I have decided to embrace the years I have lived. I have aged. Sorry got off the subject of gifts. Must be an “age” thing.

I would like folks to donate to the Humane Society of Madison County for my birthday present. (Well, everybody but my Mom as she gives cash and I need some new shoes.) As for what kind of gift, I don’t care. We have a currently wish list and you could call the shelter and talk to the staff to find out what we need. We always need funds, paper towels, poop bags for dogs at the prison, funds, leashes, copy paper, toner for copier (ask the shelter what model #), funds bleach, and much more. Did I mention funds. Can't remember. Must be an "age" thing. I don’t care what you gift as long as the shelter can use it.

I know my birthday falls on a sunday this year and the shelter is closed. However, we will be open on the 11th which is Columbus Day and a holiday for some folks and our normal business hours are noon to 5, Monday to Saturday. I would love to come into the shelter on the 12th to find a room full of donations and or an envelope filled with money. That would make me so happy to know that my “aging” helped the animals.

I am hoping you will help me in celebrating age and my birthday. I am hoping you can help make my birthday wish come true.

We, humans, like to judge things by age. A well aged bottle of wine or port is usually very smooth where as an aged cheese can be sharp. Now I just need to figure out if age has made me smooth in my sayings and sharp minded or what. Don’t answer that. Just wish me a Happy Birthday if you see and remember gifts to shelter by the 12th. Thanks much and age well.

London State Theater and the HSMC

Update--The HSMC would like to thank the London State Theater, the Peytons and all the movie goers and HSMC supporters for a wonderful weekend. The Grand Reopening of the London State Theater raised over $3000 in funds and supplies for the HSMC.

Many thanks and as they say in the show biz, "Break a leg".

The London State Theater is owned by Board Treasurer George Peyton and his wife, Shelter Director Betty Peyton. After almost a year old remodel, the movies will be playing once more.

Grand Opening Weekend is March 19th, 2010. The movies are Wizard of Oz, Jaws and Exorcist. A classic weekend to start the new movie experiences at the London State Theater.

The Peytons are so excited about this event, they have decided to donate the entire weekend's ticket sales to the HSMC. Advance tickets will be available at the HSMC office beginning on Monday March 14th during open hours of Noon - 5:00pm. The tickets will be available until Friday March 19th at 5:00pm. And if you can not make it to the shelter during those hours, you can do a paypal donation and email betty@madisonhumane.org with which show, time, and date and tickets will be set aside for you.

The HSMC will be taking donations for the tickets in both cash and by Wish List items that are needed at the shelter. Please view our Donation "Wish List" here on our website.

A few tickets will be reserved for walk up at the theater, but we advise everyone who wishes to attend to pick up tickets early. We believe that some showtimes will sell out and do not wish to turn anyone away.

Hard to Place Pets

Update to story on January 22nd. Of the pets listed below, Homer, Oro, Wednesday and Mortisha have been adopted. We still need homes for the rest. Can you help us find them a good home.

Some of the animals that come into the HSMC are harder to place than others. Not because they are bad, but because of many reasons. We had three pets who came to our shelter in 2008 and still have not been adopted. We want to tell you about them.

First is Oro, male cat who came to our shelter in 2008. He is orange and white and now about 2 to 2 1/2 years old. Oro loves to play with other cats and even likes dogs. He loves attention and being held. We believe the reason Oro has been over looked time and again is because he has "weepy eyes". This means his eyes always look watery and "dirty" or stained. This cleared up when he went into foster care. But now that he is up at the PetSmart Store Westpointe Plaza in Columbus off Hilliard Rome Road, his eyes are back to weeping again. It is because he lives in a cage too close to the litter box. The dust from the litter, we believe, is what cause the "weepy eye". After all, in foster care, he had the run of the whole place.

Oro's adoption fee is now discounted to $40.00 instead of the usual $60.00. He is current on his vaccines, deworming, tested neg for Feline Leuk/FIV and neutered.

Second and third hard to place pets are Ben and Jerry. They were found on New Year's Eve 2008 and brought into the shelter. They are medium size dogs weighing about 35 pounds. They are nothing more than a mutt. We have them listed as a sheltie with maybe spaniel. However, they are older, maybe 8 years old. To some folks, they think this is really old. But to be honest, if well cared for, they could live for another 8 or 10 years. Who honestly knows how long a dog will live. We want them to live forever, but in reality, that does not happen.

Ben is black with brown markings and Jerry is salt and pepper. Both boys like other dogs, but need a home with no cats. They entered the prison program on March 17th, 2009. This is where inmates foster some of our dogs, teach them basic commands and work on housebreaking. Both boys did great in this program. However, Ben recently got kicked out for starting to guard his "home" and growled at an officer. (Guard dogs are not allowed in the prison.) So Ben is now back at the shelter. Jerry is still in prison.

Their adoption fee is $75.00 for each. Normal adoption fee for dogs is $105.00 which includes heartworm testing, vaccines, deworming, neuter and a Home Again Microchip.

The boys do not have to be adopted together as they had not been together since arriving. They just need a good home with a loving person to take care of them.

Next is some of the harder to place pets who came to the shelter early in 2009.

First is Diesel. He had come to our shelter back in 2008 and went to prison for 5 months. He was adopted, then returned in beginning of 2009 after several months at home. Diesel is a rott/lab mix. He needs a home with family who can remember that he is a pet and not to be treated like an equal. When you do this with some dogs, they then start to think "well if nobody else is going to be top of the pack, I will be". Which is what Diesel did. He would not listen to the kids or mom in the family. He only viewed the dad as top and Diesel as second in the pack. So Diesel was returned to the shelter.

Diesel needs a home with no small kids because of his dominate issue. He also needs folks who understand large dogs (he is 80 lbs) and would love to find somebody who understand Rotts. He does like other dogs, but can be dominate over male dogs and he does not like cats. Diesel's adoption fee is now $75.00.

Second is Homer. He is the shelter director's favorite dog. He is a lab mix about 3 years old. His problem, he is a big black mutt (weighs 85 lbs). These kinds of dogs get over looked time and again. However, Homer is one of the only dogs that the director can take to adoption events and not kennel Homer. If she tells him to stay, he does. If she says come, he does. His one other problem is he will not heel when walking unless he has a gentle leader or head halter on. He is one of the best trained dogs in the opinion of the director. Homer loves other dogs and will give chase to cats. He is a good boy who deserves a good family to love him. Homer's adoption fee is now $75.00.

Third is Sweetest. She came to our shelter back in 2008. She went to the prison program and was adopted. However, after several months in the home, she was returned. Sweetest and their older female dog just could not get along. Both girls wanted to be the dominate female dog in the house which does not work. Sweetest came back to the shelter and back to prison. She is listed as a mastiff/shepherd mix. She is a big girl weighing in at 85 pounds and is now about 3 years old. She is good with dogs and did not mind cats too much. Sweetest's adoption fee is $75.00.

Fourth and Fifth are Wednesday and Mortisha. Two female felines who came to the shelter at the beginning of 2009. They are pretty tigers who like other cats, but really don't like dogs. They have been at the shelter since they were only 2 months old. But they have been over looked time and again. We are not sure why other than they look like every other tiger cat. Most folks when they come to adopt are drawn to cats with unique markings or colors. Tiger and black cats are overlooked lot.

The girls do not have to be adopted together. If adopted apart, their fee is $40 each. But if adopted together, it is $70.00. After all, they have lived together at the shelter their whole life.

Feline Frenzy Adopt-a-thon

Humane Society of Madison County is having an adopt-a-thon on all our fabulous felines starting October 20th until December 30th. We are busting at the seams with some cute cats and cuddly kittens.

The discounted adoption fees range by age.

Kittens under 6 months old - $55.00

Kittens over 7 months but under 1 year old - $50.00

Cats between 1 to 3 years old - $45.00

Cats over 3 years old - $40.00

An additional $5.00 off additional felines added at the same time.
