DeeDee was not just any cat. She had come to the HSMC a few years ago. DeeDee had autoimmune problems so it was decided that she would become a volunteer/employee. Her pay was a place to live and plenty of cat food.

DeeDee took her job in stride. DeeDee was a public greeter along side her pal and fellow feline, Shelley. If one of them was not on the desk to greet the pubic, the other one was. DeeDee was also known to go out into the parking lot to find folks to bring into the shelter. This always had one of the staff running after DeeDee to bring her back up to the office.

One other jobs of DeeDee’s was to test dogs and other cats for cat friendliness. DeeDee was not fearful of other animals. She was always walking outside into the dog’s front play area and several times have a bit of fur plucked off as a dog would go and chase her out. Yet, this never did discourage DeeDee to stop venturing into that area.

DeeDee was not placed up for adoption mostly do to her autoimmune problem. This “problem” resulted in major green snot boogers flying whenever DeeDee would sneeze. Whomever was closest to the paper towels knew it was their job to help clean DeeDee’s face after a sneezing fit. DeeDee also had a “problem” with peeing in empty boxes, litter pans with no litter, dish drainers, the sink. It was believed that she was just working so hard that she never realized how far she was from her litter box and just could not make it there before “nature called”.

DeeDee always had the shelter staff looking for her as she was always finding neat places to get into and hide. Many of these places were where cats should not be like the closest, the desk drawer, food storage unit, dog house in the dog play area. DeeDee was always very sneaky in getting into these places. This because DeeDee’s down fall. On July 21, DeeDee had snuck into the shelter van without being seen by anybody. Once the van was closed up, DeeDee had no way of getting out or being heard by staff. She was found, gone from heat stoke.

The HSMC staff is hoping that folks will learn from DeeDee’s tragic death and remember to always know where your outdoor felines are to keep them safe. Felines are known to hide under hoods of cars, sleep on top of car tires or even under cars, for getting into sheds, garages and many other places.

DeeDee will be sadly missed by all who knew her. We believe that she is now at the Rainbow Bridge finding every single hidey hole she can along with trying to keep everybody in line. We just wonder who is going to volunteer for “snot duty”. Rest in Peace DeeDee. You were loved and will be missed.

Jonas

Jonas, my 12 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. We had Jonas since he was a puppy of 8 weeks old. She passed away sometime between 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. We were not able to find any signs that indicated the cause of her death, so we hope that it was peaceful. It must have been a beautiful day here at the Labrador Retreat and we buried her in a place where she may have spent much of the day in the sunshine, keeping an eye on things. She was a magnificent dog who we love very much and will miss terribly. I've attached a couple of pictures which remind me of her unique personality, sincerity, and charm.

If you ever have the opportunity, please honor our beloved Nala's memory by giving a homeless dog a chance. I didn't know the extent of the abuse, only that I had to help this dog with the big sad brown eyes and coat of silk. Sierra was only two at the time, so I was a little concerned about Peppers behavior around a loud child. The two of them bonded very quickly and became inseparable. Sierra would ride Pepper like a horse. Pepper would lay down on the floor and let Sierra sit on her and then she would stand up then they would walk all over the place.

I will never forget Sierra's 1st day of school. Pepper cried all day. She soon learned the schedule of the bus and would sit waiting patiently, staring intently out the window to see her little girl come out the door of that big yellow thing. Pepper slept in bed with Sierra every night doing her job. Protecting her human. When arthritis took over, she would sleep at her doorway.

Pepper never came to like men, which in a way was good. She wasn't a prejudiced dog. Race nor ethnicity meant a thing to her. If you were a man, you were not coming in her house period. Because of the abuse, Pepper was not a trusting dog. She wasn't a dog that you could take anywhere other than walks in the neighborhood and hope and pray she didn't see another dog, or God help you a cat.

Despite all her faults which I know came from the abuse, she was a loving, gentle, devoted dog. She gave us 12 years filled with happiness and comfort. I could ask for no more. I slept peacefully at night knowing that no one or nothing was going to get close to her house without her letting me know. I miss that security tremendously.

I know that she was as happy and content with us as we were with her.

But now Pepper sits on a shelf in my bedroom watching over me, and I know that she out of pain and is healthy again. I know that once she crossed that Rainbow Bridge on Feb. 8th, 2008, she learned to like other dogs and is probably sleeping with a cat right now.

Donna Smith

Harlem aka Little Buddy

Harlem adopted May 20th, 2001 at the age of 2 years.
